Britain’s most popular story-teller Catherine Ann Cookson lived a life as dramatic as anything she wrote about in her best-selling novels.
She was born on 27th 1906 in South Tyneside in a poor family. Catherine later drew on her childhood experiences for her novels.
In the late 1920s, young Catherine was so desperate to escape that she moved south to Sussex in search of respectability and security. She worked in a laundry and saved as much as she could, so that she was finally able to buy a large house.
When she was 34 years old a schoolteacher Thomas Cookson fell in love with her and soon they married. Their love was so great that it lasted until their deaths. Catherine often suffered from physical illness and, on the advice of her doctor, she took up writing. It was in 1948 that her first novel, “Kate Hannigan”, was published in 1968. During her lifetime, she had more than 90 books published. Her award-winning dramas were so popular that they attracted audiences of over 13 million for each screening of the television adaptations. As her health became worse, the couple settled back in the Northeast where she continued to write.
Catherine Ann Cookson died on 11th June 1998. Her story of triumph over poverty attracts thousands of fans each year to where she lived. Trained guides accompany tours so that visitors can discover more about the places associated with her life and writing.
