There are at least 31 thousand freshwater lochs in Scotland Loch is a Scottish Gaelic word for a lake which has been borrowed by Scots and Scottish English to apply to such bodies of water, especially those located in Scotland.
There are however, one or two man-made "lakes"; the Lake of the Hirsel being an example.
The most famous lochs are Loch Lomond , St Mary's Loch and Loch Ness.
Loch Lomond is a freshwater Scottish loch, lying on the Highland Boundary Fault. It is 39 kilometres (24 miles) long and between 1.21 kilometres (0.75 miles) and 8 kilometres (5.0 miles) wide. Of all lakes in Great Britain, it is the largest by surface area, and the second largest (after Loch Ness) by water volume. Lock Lomond lies not far from Glasgow, the country's largest city. Loch Lomond has 30 beautiful islands, including Inchmurrin, the largest fresh water island in the British Isles. It is a popular leisure destination and is featured in song.
St Mary's Loch is the largest natural loch in the Scottish Borders Region and is situated about 72 kilometres (45 miles) south of Edinburgh.
Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands. Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch by surface area at 56 km2 (21 sq mi) after Loch Lomond, but due to its great depth it is the largest by volume. Loch Ness is best known as a home of the legendary Loch Ness Monster, also known as "Nessy". This large prehistoric creature is said to be living in the deep waters of Loch Ness. Boat cruises operate from various locations on the loch shore, giving visitors the chance to look for the "monster".
